I was about to respond to a post elsewhere regarding tithing while poor,
as I was typing it I realised the mini-story I was telling was a bit antichurch,
so I backed out and didn't respond. So I'll tell it here.
My father is a very upstanding, though very liberal, SDA. However, he has recently become uncomfortable with the extra pressure put on church officials to tithe EXACTLY their 10% or more as to be an example. He has explained why he doesn't and it wasn't very accepted, so he's protesting by no longer holding any church office, even if offered to him, and explains his position again whenever they try to offer him a position.
He believes that his god wishes him to help family and friends above tithe and offerings, as a result he gives FAR, FAR, more than ten percent of his earnings and his time to people in need, and little or no tithe to the church.
My father is the number one reason I have endless respect for real christians,
even if I sometimes disagree with his giving decisions, it's his choice.
WWJD, motherfuckers.
