the phone rang and i thought i'd carefully sat my laptop down on the end table and i hopped up to run to the phone
and CRASH went my laptop onto the floor
it landed nic card side down and bent the connector and the connector popped off
(phone stopped ringing before i could get to it)

so i shut down the laptop and inspected everything to make sure i hadn't actually broken the connector or any of the pins on the card itself and it all looked fine but the connecter was all wobbly but i squeezed the part of the nic card where it goes in so it would stay put

well guess what kids, IT NO WORKIE!
it looks like it's fine but no lights come on and NO CONNECTION

BLARG!
so i have no idea who called, i left kal a message on his pager but it must not have been him cause he didn't call back
who else would be calling me at this hour?

so anyway, i'm smart and i connected the long cat5 to the modem then to the desktop computer and copied all the information on my laptop onto the desktop and i'm online
=D

kal wants to get me a USB nic because of how flimsy the normal nic card connectors are, but i've only got one USB port on my laptop and i use it a lot
:/ fucking thing

i stood in middle of the living room and bitched at it for quite a while

I h8 the lil dongles on NICs... if you ask me, the best way to go is with a card with an integrated jack (like my lil Xircom)... The USB ones are cool... just get a little hub and you're set... it's much less expensive than getting a card with Xjack or Realjack.

You might be able to purchase a replacement connector for cheap (I think its a standard connector).. But as kal said a USB NIC would be more reliable.

You connected the two modems together and made essentially a null modem connection? Kinda slow (33.6kbps max I think).. But it works.. Haha, its not exactly common knowledge that modems can work without a phone connection.

Fitting a Cat 5 cable with 8 conductors into a modem with 4 conductors must of been some sort of magic trick..
