A local legend of Springfield, Missouri, is that there is a professor at Drury College who opens each year of classes by holding a book at arm's length and letting go, to see if it will fall again. It's to show that natural laws should not be taken for granted, that gravity could quit at any moment. Or somthing. You know how professors are.
