Not too surprisingly, since he stopped smoking pot at the same time as he had the hole drilled in his skull, he started to see things more clearly and his memory improved dramatically.

Seems pretty obvious that not smoking caused those changes.

if you read all the way to the bottom after all that he decides that yes it was placebo effects, lack of pot effects, and so on, and that it didn't actually work

i remembered what i wanted add to that

the euphoria he experienced was pretty standard for someone living thru a physically traumatic experience, and he comes to that conclusion after the effects of such wear off
