I have to say I feel kind of ambivalent about it -- on the one hand i think it's positive and neat; on the other I felt a bit sad because so many of them sounded as if they were asking for something very basic that they *haven't* received.

I thought that as well, but that's also sort of the point of it, I think. To express that "yes we deserve these basic things as well."
