I've no clue how much of the classic Doctor Who I have actually watched. I caught it randomly on PBS as a kid and throughout my life. Mostly Hartnell, Pertwee and Baker, I think. As such I do not participate in debates regarding events or continuity because I just plain can't remember or even remember if I ever knew.
Of course every Who fan is aware of the continuity problems, but much like Star Trek: TNG did later, the later serieses of Who have always attempted to retcon and patch things up. One of the points of contention that I've seen quite a lot, after the new series with Nine showed the actual Dalek creature and the inside of the Dalek's shell, that originally the Daleks were empty shells with no creature inside. Citing that one of the companions got in and "drove one about."
Anyway, I have been on a mission to acquire every single episode, and recently I've started watching some of it from the very beginning. I am currently on Series 1 , episode 2 "The Daleks" part 6 "The Ordeal." And the entirety of episode 2 has been the very first encounter with ... well you can guess that from the title.
And yes one of the companions does get inside a Dalek and drive it about, AFTER he and The Doctor have made disgusted faces at something we couldn't see and removed said something, carefully, with a jacket. As they leave with one of them in the Dalek's shell, we see tentacles wriggling out from under the side of the jacket discarded in the corner of the room.
Daleks.were.originally.creatures.inside.of.robot.bodies. just like they are in the new series. Case closed.
