Have been reading a lot lately about things to grow, since I'd really like to start that balcony garden I've been planning for ages.

Stumbled across a few forums in which allegedly professional growers advised the Vegas asker to only grow in the winter, the reason being that "Las Vegas winters are the equivalent to summers elsewhere."

WUT.

Ok I understand that people who've never been in a desert and live nowhere near one, and have only seen them on television have ridiculous misconceptions about them. But these idiots I'm referring to had extensive growing knowledge of many other places they'd never been to.

It doesn't take more than a minute or two of googling to discover that IT DOES, IN FACT get below 70 degrees here.

Yes it gets hot, very hot, not as hot as the middle east, but still, fucking hot.

It gets cold, rather cold, it gets to freezing and occasionally slightly below. Which to some people isn't very cold. But it is NOT vegetable growing weather equivalent to summers in normal places.

It's just the mohave desert, people, not another fucking planet.

Grow tomatoes when it won't get below freezing at night. Easy, they love sun and you just have to water them once a day. And god damn are fresh tomatoes off the vine the best thing ever.*

*unless you're turned off by eating something that squishy inside.

Tomatoes are the driving force behind this idea. When I was a kid we grew several sorts in the backyard, those store bought things are nothing like real maters.

So true!!

Now I want a neighbor growing some so I can go loot them off the vines in return for some barter. If only.

God, how I love to eat squishy things....mmmm.....the wigglier the better too.

If you're interested in growing something more ornamental, let me know, as I have a list of good flowering/ornamental bushes and shrubs that can be grown and maintained in LV.

I was doing a walkabout of the balcony today and thinking about where to put things and I was pondering some flowery guys too.

I think I can put little window box like things on the inside of the balcony wall, there doesn't seem to be anything in the HOA rules against such things as long as not permanently attached, neighbour has a bunch of viney flowery things on their porch and balcony.
