1 out of about 100 times, plugging something into a usb port causes instant shutdown.

That just happened. wtf. It happens often enough to notice,
but rare enough that it startles the shit out of me when it happens,
I look around wildly to make sure the electricity is still on.

It's the same machine that I also use linux on, it's never done that to me when I'm on the ubuntu side of the system, and I do A LOT of digital camera picture managing over there also. It transfers from usb a little faster than in windows, and gimp is gimp whichever side of the computer I'm using.
