Productive insomnia.
Jun. 4th, 2010 09:03 amSometime after we first moved in here, nearly a year and a half ago now, I stole an idea from Loopy and I covered our sun-facing windows (of which my bedroom widnow is one) with styrofoam sheeting underneath the blinds. It didn't block out all the light but it definitely blocked out the heat. I had SWORN that I was not going to do the tacky pushpin-blankets-up-over-windows in lieu of curtains thing, I was determined to wait it out till curtains.
Well the last really really bad bout of insomnia I gave in and pushpinned up blankets. Even though I haven't had any real insomnia since starting zoloft (till now), they've stayed up.
I've had a little trouble getting to sleep the last few nights, probably because I've been suddenly feeling better so I've been crazyinsanecleaninggirl and my body probably just isn't used to all the constant activity suddenly. It turned into insomnia instead of just trouble falling asleep this time. I laid in bed from around 3am till bit past 6am, trying to sleep.
And then the sun came up and that just made it worse, so I started trying to come up with a better alternative than the stupid blankets pinned up, I got an idea and just gave up on the sleep and got out of bed.
Firstly, I took the blankets down and tossed them in the wash. Then I took a bunch of my unused fabric pieces and pinned them with straight pins directly to the styrofoam. I did this in layers till it became almost totally opaque. Then I lowered the blinds back over it, and just stuck up a couple scarves on top to block the sliver of light coming from the top.
Here is before from a few days ago, the purpose of the picture was actually the new placement of my bed and the skirt I made for it.

And here is a picture I took just now from bed. It blocks the light so well that I had to turn on a light in my room and use the low light setting on my fon camera to take this picture.

Scarves stuck up there is still a little tacky but it's heaps better than blankets. You can see a bit of the fabric peeking out around the blinds, I'll see to that later. I think this is quite a nice solution until I eventually make real blackout curtains. Because it would be nice to NOT have my window totally blacked out sometimes.
I am pleased, and now I am hoping I will end this insomnia with lovely sleep without the sun staring at me through the window.
